The Onojie of Ekpoma, His Royal Majesty, Barr. Anthony Ehizojie II, has mobilised native doctors and traditional practitioners across the kingdom to invoke ancestral powers against those involved in kidnapping.
The solemn event unfolded at the Ekpoma Market Square, where a host of native doctors, including prominent figures such as Chief Ominimini (Dr. Tunde Abu), Chief Dr. Noble, Chief Napoleon, Dr. Abu, and Dr. Oyas, publicly announced and enacted a spiritual directive to place severe traditional curses on kidnappers. The curses, which were issued in the presence of community members and onlookers, are aimed at deterring both direct and indirect involvement in the crime, which has seen a worrying surge across Edo State in recent times.
In an exclusive conversation with Winning Media Online, Chief Ominimini explained the far-reaching consequences of the ritual.
“Our Onojie, His Royal Majesty Zaiki Anthony Ehizojie II, along with all the Chiefs of Ekpoma Kingdom, are deeply concerned about the disturbing increase in kidnappings in Esanland,” he stated. “It is alien to our traditions, and we are determined to put a stop to it using the powers passed down to us by our forefathers.”
He added: “In the olden days, our ancestors used these spiritual measures to maintain order and peace. These practices remain potent. Anyone involved in kidnapping, whether directly or by association, should know that the spiritual consequences are severe.”
Chief Ominimini expressed support for the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, noting that traditional efforts were meant to complement modern law enforcement.
“We commend the efforts of the police and security services, but they cannot be everywhere. Our role is to back them up with spiritual measures that serve as a deterrent to those who may be planning or supporting these heinous crimes,” he said.
The traditional healer also urged parents and guardians to speak to their children about avoiding criminal activities, especially those tied to kidnapping, warning that Esanland would no longer serve as a refuge for such criminals.
The Onojie’s initiative follows a similar exercise recently undertaken in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area, where native doctors also resorted to spiritual interventions to tackle criminality. Moreover, the move aligns with the tough stance adopted by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who has repeatedly reiterated his administration’s zero tolerance for kidnappers and cult-related activities.
