The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Christian Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has made a strong appeal to fellow clergymen to stop financially exploiting their members under the guise of asking them to sow seeds for prosperity.
Speaking during a sermon on Friday, October 18, Pastor Kumuyi addressed the controversial practice of encouraging poor members, especially widows, to give what little they have, with promises of financial multiplication. He stressed that the true role of preachers is to uplift and support those in need, not to take advantage of them.
“The anointing on our lives should add value to the people, especially to those who are down and poor. We should be helping widows, not taking the little they have,” Pastor Kumuyi said.
He further condemned the way some preachers manipulate members with promises of blessings if they sow financial seeds, urging them to examine the harm caused by such practices.
He cited the biblical example of Elijah, who provided for widows rather than exploiting them. Pastor Kumuyi expressed concern over how many church leaders have become wealthy at the expense of their congregations, particularly the most vulnerable members.
“The preachers of today are becoming richer while their members, especially widows, are getting poorer,” he stated.
He urged preachers to follow the example of Elisha, who brought supernatural provision to those in need, rather than accumulating wealth for themselves.
Kumuyi’s message comes at a time when the prosperity gospel, which links financial giving to divine rewards, has faced increasing criticism.
