Lagos State’s political landscape underwent a dramatic shift on Monday, 13 January 2025, as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, was impeached by a majority vote. The decision came after allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office were levelled against him.

Obasa, who has represented Agege Constituency I in the assembly since 2003 and served as Speaker since 2015, was removed from office following a plenary session in which over 90% of lawmakers voted in favour of his impeachment. His departure marks the end of nearly a decade of leadership in the House.

Immediately following Obasa’s removal, Honourable Mojisola Lasbat Miranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was sworn in as the new Speaker, making history as the first woman to hold the position in the state’s legislature.

The circumstances surrounding Obasa’s impeachment remain unclear, though political sources suggest a combination of internal dissent and shifting alliances may have played a role in the decision. In an unexpected turn of events, loud chants of “Senator Pepper” were heard immediately after Obasa’s ousting, though the connection between the term and the impeachment is yet to be explained.

In her inaugural speech, Honourable Miranda, who now leads the House, promised to prioritise transparency, inclusivity, and the welfare of Lagos residents. Her ascension to the top leadership role has sparked speculation that her appointment could be a strategic political move ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections.
