Nigeria kept their faint hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Maseru on Friday.
After a cagey and goalless first half, captain William Troost-Ekong broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 55th minute, giving the Super Eagles a deserved lead. The visitors pressed for more and were rewarded when Akor Adams doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a composed finish in the 80th minute.
Lesotho, however, refused to roll over, pulling one back late through Tšepo Kalake, setting up a nervy finale. Despite the late scare, Nigeria held on to claim all three points — a much-needed morale boost after a shaky start to their qualifying campaign.
The win lifts the Super Eagles’ hopes, but they still face an uphill battle to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup, with crucial fixtures ahead against South Africa and Zimbabwe.
