The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to prosecute several former local government chairmen in Edo State, following revelations of massive looting involving up to N95 billion in public funds.
Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, made the announcement over the weekend after receiving the findings of an investigative panel set up to probe the financial activities of the 18 Local Government Chairmen impeached earlier this year. The investigation covered the period from 4 September 2023 to November 2024.
The report, compiled by the Administrative Panel of Enquiry, revealed a staggering misuse and diversion of funds, which were intended for local government development projects. It found that N95.08 billion allocated to the councils was either mismanaged or siphoned off into private accounts.
In a statement, Governor Okpebholo expressed his deep concern over the findings, describing the actions of the impeached council leaders as reckless and exploitative. “The looting of public funds by these officials under the previous administration was a betrayal of the trust of the Edo people,” he said. “These individuals took everything that belonged to Edo State and used it for personal gain. This time, things will be different. We will ensure they face justice and that the stolen funds are returned to the people.”
The report further detailed how over N10 billion was siphoned off through a fraudulent scheme labelled “Security, Environment and Training”, with funds funnelling into the pockets of political elites, including individuals and companies connected to the impeached chairmen.
Governor Okpebholo did not spare former Governor Godwin Obaseki, who was also named in the report as complicit in the mismanagement. He emphasised the need for a new era of transparency in public office and expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the state’s efforts to tackle corruption.
“We are determined to change the narrative in Edo State, and we will hold those responsible to account,” Okpebholo affirmed. “With the support of the EFCC, we will bring those who have stolen from the people to justice.”
The panel, led by Barrister Solomon Imohiosen, also revealed that the investigation faced significant hurdles, including delays and incomplete financial records from the councils, as well as attempts by local government personnel to obstruct the process. Despite these challenges, the panel’s forensic audit uncovered substantial irregularities and recommended further measures to restore accountability.
The report also implicated former chairmen of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), including Oghomwen Newman Ugiagbe, for using private businesses, such as Demarriots Hotels, to facilitate the illicit transfer of funds.
As the EFCC prepares to move forward with legal proceedings, the Edo State government remains firm in its commitment to fight corruption and ensure that public funds are used for their intended purpose – the benefit of the people.
