Efforts to strengthen food production and improve farmers’ capacity in Nasarawa State received a major boost on Wednesday as Governor Abdullahi A. Sule flagged off the distribution of agricultural inputs and equipment under the Federal Government/IFAD Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP).

The flag-off ceremony, held in Lafia, the state capital, was attended by the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, and the National Programme Coordinator of the VCDP, Dr. Fatima Aliyu.

As part of the intervention, tricycles with open bodies, popularly known as Keke Napeps, and fertilizers were handed over to various farmer groups across the state.

The beneficiaries were selected based on specific requests and their payment of matching counterpart contributions, in line with the programme’s community-driven approach.

Governor Sule described the initiative as a practical step towards modernising agriculture, easing produce transportation, and supporting smallholder farmers to scale up production and income.

He stressed that agriculture remains central to his administration’s strategy for economic diversification and employment generation.

Senator Kyari, in his remarks, lauded the state government for creating an enabling environment for federal agricultural programmes to thrive, noting that partnerships with states are critical to achieving national food security.

Ahead of the flag-off, the Minister paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at the Government House and later inspected some agro-processing mills in Lafia to evaluate ongoing investments in the agricultural value chain.
