The National Assembly has rescheduled the resumption of plenary sittings in both chambers, shifting the date from Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, to Tuesday, 7th October 2025.
A statement issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on Monday confirmed the development, noting that the decision was taken at the directive of the leadership of both chambers. He further expressed regrets over the inconveniences the postponement might cause legislators, staff, and other stakeholders.
“The shift is as directed by both chambers. Committee activities, however, will continue during the recess,” the statement read in part.
Similarly, the Senate formally notified its members through a circular signed by Mr. Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the President of the Senate. The notice urged Distinguished Senators to take note of the new date and adjust their schedules accordingly.
“Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted. Distinguished Senators are kindly invited to note the postponement and adjust their schedules,” Akubueze stated.
The latest adjustment effectively extends the lawmakers’ recess by an additional two weeks, meaning full legislative proceedings in the Red Chamber and the Green Chamber will not reconvene until October.
While plenary will remain on hold until then, committee activities are expected to continue in line with the legislature’s mandate of oversight, investigations, and other statutory duties.
The postponement has sparked curiosity within the polity, as no official reason was given for the adjustment. However, insiders suggest it may be linked to ongoing consultations and political realignments within the Senate and House of Representatives.
