The Edo State Police Command has rescued sixteen passengers abducted by gunmen along the Benin–Auchi highway.
The victims, who were travelling in a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to New Edo Line Transport Company, were freed unhurt following a swift operation by security operatives.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu and made available to Uptown Press, the ambush occurred on Friday, 5 September, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., when armed men opened fire at a sharp bend between Odemwingie and Obanrenren communities. The assailants forced some passengers from both the New Edo Line bus and a Toyota Camry into the bush.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, immediately ordered the deployment of tactical teams, divisional police officers, vigilantes, and local hunters, who launched an extensive bush-combing operation that led to the successful rescue.
“The victims were rescued unhurt, and efforts are ongoing to secure the release of those still in captivity. An intensive manhunt has been launched to apprehend the perpetrators,” the statement read.
The Command reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to remain calm, vigilant, and report suspicious activities via its emergency lines.
Security patrols along the Benin–Auchi corridor have been intensified as the rescue operation continues.
