The Nigerian Army has apprehended a notorious gunrunner identified as Mallam Hashimu Ahmad. Ahmad, long sought after by security agencies, was intercepted while transporting a cache of high-calibre weapons intended for terrorist groups in Kaduna State.
The arrest occurred in Saminaka, within the Lere Local Government Area. The Army’s statement on Saturday highlighted the collaborative efforts with other security agencies that led to this critical interception.
“Vigilant troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, intercepted a notorious gunrunner, Mallam Hashimu Ahmad, at Saminaka in Lere Local Government Area,” the statement read.
Ahmad, who has been on the wanted list for his role in supplying arms and ammunition to terrorist factions, was captured en route to deliver a substantial arsenal. The recovered weapons included one General Purpose Machine Gun, a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Launcher, one RPG Bomb, 1,069 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition, and one belt of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition. Both the cache of arms and the vehicle used for their transport were fully secured by the troops.
The Nigerian Army emphasized its ongoing commitment to national security and the dismantling of criminal networks contributing to instability. The statement underscored the importance of public cooperation in these efforts.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to protecting the nation and dismantling all criminal networks inducing insecurity in the country. We, therefore, enjoin the public to support the troops by providing actionable information to enhance troops’ operations against terrorists and other criminal elements to ensure a safe and secure society.”
