The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has urged workers and the general public to boycott the services of telecommunications giants MTN, Airtel, and Glo, in protest against recent tariff hikes. The boycott will begin on Thursday, 13 February 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and will continue daily until the end of the month.
The decision was made by the NLC’s Central Working Committee (CWC), led by President Joe Ajaero and Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, in a statement issued on Wednesday. The NLC is demanding an immediate reversal of the tariff increases, which took effect on the same day, calling them an unjust burden on Nigerians. The union has insisted that the telecommunications providers revert to the previous tariff until further deliberations are concluded.
Ajaero and Ugboaja said, “This hike is an exploitation of ordinary Nigerians, and the government has failed to protect citizens from corporate greed. We are taking this stand to show that workers and the public will not tolerate arbitrary price increases that affect our daily lives.”
In addition to the boycott, the NLC has warned that if the tariffs are not reversed by 29 February 2025, it will move to escalate the protest with a nationwide shutdown of telecommunications services from 1 March 2025.
The Congress also expressed concern over recent tax reforms, cautioning that new fiscal policies could further burden workers and exacerbate economic hardship. While acknowledging the need for comprehensive tax reforms, the NLC is pushing for measures that would be more equitable for the Nigerian workforce.
Civil society groups, workers, and concerned citizens have been urged to join the protest, with the NLC reaffirming its commitment to fighting exploitative economic policies.
