The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhasan Yahya, will storm Asaba on Wednesday for a high-profile investiture ceremony that will officially name Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as Grand Patron of the union—one of the major highlights of the 2025 Press Week.
Yahya’s arrival sets the tone for a week of activities designed to spotlight journalism excellence, strengthen civic engagement, and deepen national conversations on Nigeria’s economic direction. Governor Oborevwori will also receive an Award of Excellence from the union in recognition of his administration’s support for media development and public communication.
The NUJ Delta State Council confirmed that the celebration will also honour prominent figures across public service, academia, and the private sector. Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu, has been named recipient of the Outstanding Public Service Award for his role in information management and infrastructure delivery. Asiwaju Sola Adebayo, MD/CEO of Iyanda Lawal Farms, will receive the Excellence in Journalism and Entrepreneurial Leadership Award for his sustained investment in journalist welfare nationwide.
Other honourees include Prof Chiemeke and TANTITA Security Services, whose contributions have shaped public policy and security operations in the Niger Delta. The keynote address will be delivered by Senator Onowakpor Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District.
This year’s Press Week, themed “Tax Regimes and Exchange Rate Unification,” runs from 16 to 23 November and will interrogate the economic realities confronting Nigerians while highlighting the media’s role in shaping public discourse. The Grand Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, 20 November, at Orchid Hotel, Asaba.
The week-long activities include a thanksgiving service, media house tours, a medical outreach, a sensitisation walk, orphanage visits, and a novelty football match between journalists and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).
As the NUJ sets its sights on economic reform, journalism ethics, and national development, the 2025 Press Week is expected to serve both as a celebration of excellence and a call for deeper collaboration between the media, policymakers, and the public.
