The New York Police Department (NYPD) is mourning the loss of Officer Emilia Rennhack, who was killed in a drunk driving incident on Long Island.
The 30-year-old off-duty officer was getting her nails done for a wedding at Hawaii Nail and Spa in Deer Park when an alleged drunk driver, Steven Schwally, 64, crashed his vehicle into the salon.
Rennhack was among four people killed in the incident, including three other women, Jiancai Chen, 37, Yan Xu, 41, and Meizi Zhang, 50. Eight others were injured, and the driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The NYPD and the Police Benevolent Association have expressed their condolences and shock over the tragic loss of Rennhack, who had been with the force since 2018. She was described as a generous and compassionate person who was loved by her colleagues and community.
The alleged drunk driver, Steven Schwally, has been charged with driving while intoxicated and is expected to face upgraded charges. This is not his first offense, having been previously charged with driving under the influence in 2014.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, with many expressing their condolences and support for the families of the victims.
