To foster a safe and respectful environment for all Corps Members, the NYSC Osun State management has taken proactive steps to educate and sensitise Corps Members on the dangers and implications of sexual harassment.

Addressing the 2025 Batch B Stream 1 Corps Members at the Multipurpose Hall of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, on Saturday, Mrs. Ronke Otunla, the Camp Director and Assistant Director Corps Guidance and Counselling, enlightened the Members on Sexual Conduct and Harassment Prevention.

Otunla described sexual harassment as a deeply harmful act that undermines dignity, trust, and safety, emphasising that its negative impact on Corps Members across the country cannot be overstated. She explained that harassment can occur in various settings including homes, schools, workplaces, and Places of Primary Assignment (PPAs) and can take physical, verbal, or cyber forms.

She outlined inappropriate physical contact, unsolicited sexual comments, jokes, and gestures as examples of misconduct, noting that harassment can occur between individuals of opposite or same sex. “Sex must be consensual and never forced,” she stressed, adding that even within romantic relationships, consent must be ongoing and respected.

She attributed common causes of sexual harassment to factors such as gender inequality, poor awareness, toxic workplace cultures, societal norms, and substance abuse.

In closing, Otunla encouraged Corps Members to take preventive steps including proper education, mutual respect, clear relationship boundaries, anonymous reporting mechanisms, and continuous sensitisation.

Her final charge was a call to courage and wisdom: “Say something, don’t keep quiet, and apply wisdom.”
