A man, believed to be in his mid-20s, tragically lost his life after being electrocuted while attempting to vandalise an electrical transformer in Benin City, Edo State.
The incident took place early on Monday morning at a transformer station located at Virginia Junction, off the 2nd East Circular Road. According to reports, the unidentified man entered the fenced-off area of the transformer with the apparent intention of stealing cables or other electrical components.
At approximately 6:45 am, police officers responded to a distress call after the man was discovered unconscious and suffering severe burns from electrocution. The victim was found inside the transformer compound, having sustained multiple burns across his body.
CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but was later pronounced dead. Preliminary investigations indicate the young man had been attempting to tamper with the transformer when the fatal accident occurred.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, but it highlights the growing issue of transformer vandalism in the region, which has led to significant power outages and financial losses for utility companies.
The identity of the man remains unknown as of the latest reports, and police are working to trace his family.
