The launch of the Boxing Competition of OredoGames2024 by the Executive Chairman of Oredo Government Council, Dr. Tom Obaseki took place on Thursday, 21st March 2024, at the indoor sports complex of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The competition drew boxers from all parts of the country, who came to challenge for various medal categories available.
This sporting event, marked a significant milestone in the history of sports in Nigeria, as it was the first time a local government was organizing an event of this magnitude.
During the event, Dr. Tom Obaseki spoke about the developmental effect of sports and the need for Oredo to begin keying in as a veritable vehicle towards internationalization. He also encouraged ward leaders to drive the initiative and make it a profitable career for younger people.
The Council chair said: As the name goes, Oredo Games suggests that we are not only going to stop with Boxing. Other sporting activities will follow.
“We are also going to have a ward Football League and these are all going together. Probably in the future, we envisage a one-week all-together sports event”
The leader of the legislative arms of the council, Hon. Harrison Idemudia, praised the dexterity of the Council Chairman for the novel idea and assured of efforts in cascading the initiative to the grassroots to encourage their active participation.
On his part, the HC, local govt, and community and chieftaincy affairs but represented by Erhabor Jackson of the State Sports Commission who stressed the need to engage the youths in sporting activities.
The participating boxers, who hailed from Lagos, Oyo, Ikpoba Okha, and the host, Oredo, were introduced to take part in the shadowboxing. The official engagement between opponents was expected to kick off by Friday at noon.
Uptown Press reports that, this event is seen as probably the best and the first boxing craft in recent times organized by the Oredo Government Council. It is a testament to the commitment to nurturing budding talents and viable community development through sports.
The competition is expected to create a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and build a career in boxing while also putting Oredo on the map as a hub for sports development in Nigeria.
