The WhatsApp account of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents the Edo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has been hacked by an unidentified individual suspected of attempting to defraud the senator’s contacts.
The former Governor of Edo State issued a public disclaimer on Thursday, alerting the public to the breach and urging people to disregard any messages originating from his compromised WhatsApp number.
According to the statement released by Oshiomhole’s media team, the hacker is currently attempting to solicit money from people saved in the senator’s contact list, under the guise of being Oshiomhole himself.
The disclaimer reads in full:
“Public Notice:
Please disregard any messages coming from Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s WhatsApp number, as the account has been compromised by a suspected hacker who is attempting to solicit money from his contacts.
Kindly ignore any communications from the number for now, as efforts are underway to recover the account.”
Oshiomhole, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been actively serving as a senator since 2023. His office has assured the public that the incident has been reported to the appropriate security and digital platforms for investigation and resolution.
Cybersecurity experts have increasingly warned that high-profile individuals are becoming more frequent targets of cyberattacks, particularly through popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp, which are often linked to sensitive personal and political communications.
Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with any suspicious messages claiming to be from the senator or requesting financial assistance.
