…Super Falcons star to end illustrious national team career
Nigerian football legend, Asisat Oshoala, has announced that she will retire from international football following the 2024/25 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), bringing an end to a glittering chapter in African women’s football.
The 29-year-old striker, who currently plays for Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States, made the announcement ahead of what will be her final continental tournament in Super Falcons colours.
Oshoala’s career with Nigeria’s senior women’s team, the Super Falcons, has been nothing short of iconic. She is a six-time winner of the CAF African Women’s Footballer of the Year award – more than any other player, male or female – and remains one of the continent’s most decorated footballers.
Her retirement will mark the close of an era for Nigerian football, particularly as she was the first African woman to score in and win the UEFA Women’s Champions League, achieving the feat with Spanish giants FC Barcelona.
Born in October 1994, Oshoala rose to prominence during the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, where she won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot. Since then, she has remained a dominant force both on the African continent and on the global stage.
In addition to her international achievements, she has enjoyed a successful club career in England, China, Spain, and now the United States, consistently proving herself as one of the most talented forwards of her generation.
While Oshoala has yet to confirm if she will continue at club level after WAFCON, fans and analysts alike have begun to reflect on her legacy — one defined by resilience, excellence, and trailblazing success for African women in football.
