…To be Charged for Criminal Act of Attempted Suicide

A middle-aged man, who attempted jumping into a Lagos lagoon but rescued by the police, is currently being held and may be charged to court for attempt suicide, the Lagos State Police Command has said.
The 54-year-old man, Akinlolu Ajayi, a staff of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) on Town Planning Way, Ilupeju, Lagos, was sighted by Anti-crime operatives of the Bariga Police Divisional Headquarters on routine patrol of the area, who swiftly rescued him.
He was subsequently taken into police protective custody.
Disclosing this in a press release, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu said, the man, a resident of No.1, Owodunni Street, Oworonsoki, was seen on the Third Mainland Bridge, at about 09:25am on September 15, 2021, trying to jump into the lagoon at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront, stating further that, but for the Anti-crime patrol men, he would have claimed his life.
Ajisebutu described the rescue operation as a testimony of the Lagos State Police Command’s demonstration of its commitment to the protection of lives and property of the citizenry.
According to the command’s spokesman, “The Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, having directed that the man’s family should be contacted for necessary action, appeals to members of the public not to take their own lives, no matter the challenges they are currently facing”.
Sounding phylosophically, the CP said, “Such challenges are merely ephemeral”, even as he warned that such condemnable act was not only morally wrong but criminal.
“Meanwhile, the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation and subsequent prosecution”, the statement added.
