The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed claims circulating on social media regarding the arrest of popular social activist, Omoyele Sowore, describing them as “falsehoods and deliberate disinformation.”

In a statement issued on Friday, 8 August, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police explained that Sowore was lawfully arrested on credible allegations of forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences currently under investigation.

Adejobi stressed that the arrest was carried out in line with constitutional provisions and due process, with Sowore being released on bail within the 48-hour window stipulated under Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution. He added that the activist is fully aware of the allegations against him and is expected to appear in court in the coming days.

The Force also rejected allegations that Sowore was tortured or subjected to inhuman treatment while in custody. According to the statement, the viral image showing him with a bandaged arm was misleading, as the bandage was among his personal items before arrest. The Inspector-General of Police has, however, ordered an internal investigation into how he accessed it while in detention, noting that Sowore twice declined medical examinations by independent police medical teams on 7 and 8 August.

Adejobi maintained that the detention is backed by a valid court order and has no political undertones. He urged the media, civil society, and the public to verify facts before making statements that could undermine public trust in law enforcement.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to human rights protection, the rule of law, and justice without fear or favour. No individual, regardless of status or influence, is above the law,” the statement concluded.
