Academy Staff Union members of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, staged a protest on Tuesday in response to the suspension of the institution’s Rector, Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo.
The suspension, which followed corruption allegations against the Rector, led to the grounding of academic activities as staff members expressed discontent, considering it a violation of the institution’s constitution.
The suspension was ordered by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, based on allegations of financial recklessness, corruption, misappropriation of funds, and abuse of office against the Rector.
In response, Mr. Alabi Kehinde Adeyemi was appointed as the acting Rector until a proper investigation is conducted.
The protest saw academic staff chanting solidarity songs and blocking the main entrance of the campus in Iree, affecting students who were in the middle of writing exams.
The President of the union, Dr. Fatai Afolabi, declared an indefinite suspension of academic activities, expressing dissatisfaction with the governor’s actions.
As the protest continued, classrooms were left empty, and students were seen discussing the issues in groups.
One of the students, Abimbola, mentioned being unaware of the ongoing issues and appealed for a peaceful resolution to allow academic activities to resume.
