In a scathing rebuke, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted Comrade Philip Shaibu for his return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), branding his move as a failed attempt to undermine the democratic will of Edo State’s electorate.
The statement, signed by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, accuses Shaibu of joining a party that it describes as “losing, insensitive, and anti-people.”
The PDP’s statement claims Shaibu’s return to the APC reveals his true alignment with a political platform characterized by corruption, malevolence, and oppression. According to the PDP, Shaibu’s actions confirm suspicions that his involvement in the governorship race was never about serving Edo State’s interests but rather about personal gain and disruption.
“By confessing that his heart has always been in, and returning to the rejected APC, which is imperiled by an unqualified candidate; Comrade Shaibu only validates the widespread opinion that he was not in the governorship race to serve the interest and wellbeing of the people of Edo State,” the statement reads.
The PDP claims Shaibu had no substantial campaign agenda and focused solely on derailing the PDP’s nomination processes and frustrating the electorate’s will. The statement also highlights that Shaibu’s return to the APC has not been well-received within his local political circles. APC stakeholders from his Etsako West Local Government Area reportedly described Shaibu as “a complete political liability and highly cancerous politician that must be avoided.”
According to the PDP, these stakeholders believe Shaibu’s political career is marked by conflict and discord, making him an undesirable addition to any party. They argue his return to the APC is a calculated attempt to bring internal strife and crisis.
Reflecting on the broader political implications, the PDP asserts that Shaibu’s departure has energized its campaign, as more Edo State citizens distance themselves from him and align with the PDP’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo. The statement welcomes new supporters from the APC and other parties, touting Ighodalo as the only candidate with the capacity, competence, and vision to lead Edo State towards sustainable development.
The PDP urged the people of Edo State to remain steadfast in their support for Dr. Asue Ighodalo in the upcoming September 21, 2024, governorship election, reinforcing their commitment to democratic values and the well-being of the state.
