President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Vice Admiral (rtd) Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, a move to restore order. The ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja following a brief meeting between the President and Ibas on Wednesday afternoon.

This decision comes after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to an ongoing political crisis that has severely disrupted governance and jeopardised public safety. As part of his intervention, the President announced the suspension of the state’s Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

Vice Admiral Ibas has been entrusted with the critical task of overseeing governance in the state. However, it is important to note that while he will play a pivotal role in managing the state’s affairs, he will not have the authority to enact new legislation.

In his address, President Tinubu reiterated the importance of maintaining an independent judiciary during this transitional period, ensuring that legal processes remain unaffected as Ibas assumes his new responsibilities. The appointment aims to bring stability back to Rivers State amid ongoing challenges.
