A team of 23 Russian engineers, who were part of the original team that constructed the Ajaokuta Steel Company, has arrived in Ajaokuta to conduct a comprehensive technical audit of the facility.
The visit marks a significant step towards the long-anticipated completion of the steel project, which has remained stalled for decades.
The advance team will collaborate with engineers from the Ajaokuta Steel Company to assess the current state of the infrastructure. This audit is expected to identify key areas where modernization is necessary, particularly the replacement of outdated analog equipment with modern digital systems to enhance operational efficiency.
Sumaila Abdul-Akaba, the Sole Administrator of Ajaokuta Steel Company, confirmed the arrival of the Russian engineers in an interview with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Abdul-Akaba disclosed that the team has already toured several critical units of the steel complex, including the thermal power plant, light mills section, and the oxygen plant.
The Ajaokuta Steel Company, once envisioned as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrial revolution, has faced numerous challenges since its construction began in the late 1970s. The arrival of the Russian engineers is seen as a pivotal moment that could breathe new life into the project, bringing it closer to full operation after decades of delays.
