A remarkable story of love, hope, and unwavering faith continues as Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal, known as the “Sleeping Prince,” marks his 36th birthday today. The Saudi royal family member, who has been in a deep coma since a devastating car crash in 2005, defies all expectations, with his devoted father refusing to let go of hope.

Prince Al-Waleed, the great-grandson of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, remains tethered to life through machines at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. Despite being unconscious for almost two decades, his family’s commitment to his survival remains resolute.

In 2005, the young prince was involved in a catastrophic car accident while studying at a military college, leaving him in a coma with little hope for recovery. Doctors advised his family to end life support, but Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, Al-Waleed’s father, refused to abandon his son, choosing instead to place his faith in God and medical science.

“If God had wanted him to die in the accident, he would have been in his grave now,” said Prince Khaled, whose steadfast belief has kept his son alive for 18 years. Despite the overwhelming odds and repeated medical counsel, the father’s unwavering love has ensured that Prince Al-Waleed continues to receive the care he needs, holding out hope for a miraculous recovery.

The “Sleeping Prince” remains unaware of the years that have passed, unaware of his 36th birthday or the significant legacy of his family. While not a direct son or brother to the current monarch, his lineage is that of royalty, as his grandfather, Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, was one of the many sons of King Abdulaziz, making him a direct descendant of the founding monarch.

Prince Al-Waleed’s story is one of extraordinary devotion, a symbol of the lengths to which a father will go for the life of his child, even against the counsel of the medical profession. The family continues to wait for the miracle they believe is possible, while the world watches in awe at the endurance of hope.
