The Nigerian Senate, led by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, has taken a significant step towards a unified legislative inquiry into alleged economic sabotage within the nation’s petroleum industry.
In a motion put forward by Senate Leader and Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate resolved to form a collaborative ad-hoc committee with the House of Representatives to streamline investigative efforts and improve oversight of the sector.
Senator Bamidele’s motion emphasised the need for cooperation between the two legislative chambers, as the House of Representatives had also recently debated the issue and established its own investigative committee. The Senate Leader argued that working jointly would prevent redundancy and strengthen the National Assembly’s constitutional oversight function.
“To avoid duplication and ensure a thorough investigation,” Bamidele stated, “the two chambers must work together as a National Assembly Joint Ad-hoc Committee to Investigate Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.”
The Senate adopted the proposal and resolved to officially notify the House of Representatives, requesting that it establish an equivalent number of representatives to serve on the joint committee.
This collaborative approach marks an unprecedented effort by the National Assembly to address longstanding issues within Nigeria’s petroleum sector, which has been plagued by allegations of mismanagement and corruption.
The joint committee will focus on uncovering alleged acts of economic sabotage that have impacted the industry, aiming to enhance accountability, reduce inefficiencies, and support sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
