President Bola Tinubu has formally requested Senate approval for a proposed ₦1.4 trillion budget for Rivers State for the 2025 fiscal year, following the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate the state’s previously approved spending plan.
The President’s request was delivered via a letter read aloud during Thursday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In it, Tinubu referenced the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State in March 2025, stressing that the lack of a sitting House of Assembly requires the National Assembly to step in and approve state spending.
The proposed budget outlines ambitious targets, with a strong focus on job creation and critical public services. According to the breakdown, ₦324 billion is earmarked for infrastructure development, ₦166 billion for the health sector, ₦75.6 billion for education, and ₦31.4 billion for agriculture. The administration expects these investments to generate 6,000 new jobs across the state.
The Senate has referred the proposal to its Committee on the Implementation of Emergency Rule in Rivers State, which is tasked with reviewing the budget and delivering its findings urgently.
