The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Neda Imasuen, has commended members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, for their unwavering support in promoting his legislative activities and constituency programmes.
Senator Imasuen made the remarks on Monday during the official commissioning of a newly constructed N9.5 million entrance gate at the NUJ Press Centre in Benin City.
Speaking through his representative, Engr. Joseph Eromonsele, the Senator described journalism as a vital component of democracy and expressed his long-standing admiration for the media profession. He noted that journalists play a crucial role as the watchdogs of society and serve as a vital link between the government and the people.
“I have always wanted to associate with the journalism profession because of its importance in nation-building. Journalists amplify the voices of the people and keep public office holders on their toes,” Senator Imasuen said.
The State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, while speaking at the commissioning ceremony, revealed that funds for the project were raised through support from friends, family, and associates. He said the construction of the gate was a fulfillment of one of the promises he made upon assuming office and assured that more projects would follow.
Alenkhe also used the occasion to condemn the recent closure of a radio station by the Niger State Government, describing it as an attack on press freedom.
Former NUJ Chairman in Edo State, Mr Godwin Erhahon, who was also present, lauded Alenkhe’s developmental strides but expressed concern that some officials within Unions and public institutions often frustrate efforts geared towards progress.
The newly commissioned gate, described as ultra-modern, now serves as the prominent entrance to the NUJ Press Centre and is seen as a symbol of the union’s renewed commitment to professionalism and growth.
