The Senator representing Edo South, Neda Imasuen, has explained why the road leading to his residence at Amagba community in Benin City is unpaved.
Residents had accused the lawmaker of neglecting his immediate community, with a viral video circulating online portraying the road as evidence of his alleged indifference.
Addressing journalists from the Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Edo South Journalists Forum on Sunday, Imasuen dismissed the allegations of indifference, describing his decision as an act of compassion and prioritisation.
“Oluku people came to me in distress, their homes and businesses were being washed away. I could not in good conscience ignore them. I channelled the funds to construct their road instead, and they later came back to thank me,” he explained.
Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, stressed that leadership demanded empathy, not self-interest.
“I live in Amagba and I use that road every day. If I can make sacrifices for others, then let’s all learn to put our neighbours first,” he said.
The Senator called on critics to look beyond partisan attacks and appreciate decisions taken in the wider interest of the people, adding that governance required courage to make unpopular but necessary choices.
