Senator Bernard Neda Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, is set to defect from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with the move expected to be formalised on or before Wednesday, 12 June.
The senator, who represents Edo South Senatorial District, made his intentions known during a meeting with the Labour Party’s ‘Elders Council’ on Wednesday, 4 June, in Benin City. A prominent member of the council, speaking to journalists, confirmed the development, saying Senator Imasuen sought the council’s support ahead of his anticipated defection.
“Yes, the rumour is true. Neda was with us today to inform us that he was moving us into APC. We understand and we are ready to go with him,” said the elder, a septuagenarian.
The meeting marks a significant turning point in Senator Imasuen’s political trajectory, as his switch to the APC could strengthen his ties with the Federal Government and bolster his political future in Edo State. It is widely believed that his move is in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.
A presidency source disclosed to journalists that Senator Imasuen has already briefed President Tinubu, as well as the leadership of both the Labour Party and the APC, on his readiness to formally join the ruling party.
Support for the senator appears to be growing at the grassroots level. At a recent town hall meeting held in Idokpa, Uhunmwode Local Government Area, and other Councils in the senatorial districts, traditional youth leaders known as Okaigheles publicly praised Senator Imasuen and pledged their loyalty to him in whatever political path he chooses.
Political observers note that the significance of the expected defection date, 12 June — Democracy Day — may be symbolic, representing the senator’s ongoing struggle for political self-actualisation and his commitment to democratic ideals.
There is an increasing desire across Edo South for the return of Senator Imasuen to the 11th Senate, a move that would elevate his status to that of a ranking senator and potentially position him for key leadership roles within the legislative arm.
While no official statement has yet been released by the senator or the APC confirming the exact date of defection, all indications point towards a calculated and strategic political move that could reshape the dynamics of party politics in Edo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
