A Sharia Council has called for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning that Muslims may refuse to recognise the 2027 general elections if he remains in office.

In a strongly worded statement, the council alleged the existence of a controversial brief which it claims promotes a narrative of “Christian genocide,” describing the document as divisive, inflammatory, and dangerous to Nigeria’s fragile unity.

The council expressed deep concern over what it described as a loss of confidence in INEC’s leadership, arguing that the alleged brief compromises the commission’s neutrality and credibility. It warned that allowing the current INEC chairman to oversee the 2027 elections could undermine trust in the electoral process, particularly among Muslim communities.

According to the council, Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive if electoral institutions are seen as fair, inclusive, and free from religious or ideological bias. It therefore urged the federal government and relevant authorities to urgently investigate the allegations and take decisive action to prevent a national crisis.

As of the time of filing this report, INEC has not officially responded to the allegations, while political observers warn that the controversy could further heighten religious and political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
