A dramatic divorce case unfolded on Thursday at a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, as a man, Lukman surname withheld, asked the court to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Aderonke, alleging violence, infidelity and repeated threats to his life.
Lukman told the court that he could no longer live in peace with Aderonke, describing their marriage as turbulent from the outset due to what he called her troublesome and destructive behaviour.
According to the plaintiff, his wife constantly picked fights and often turned minor disagreements into violent confrontations that left their home in ruins.
“Any time we quarrel, she destroys things in the house,” Lukman said, recalling an incident in which Aderonke allegedly broke the door to their home and shattered the louvre blades on the windows with a pestle.
He further alleged that his wife once set part of their house on fire and, instead of showing remorse, boasted that her intention was to roast him alive along with the building.
Lukman also told the court that Aderonke extended her hostility beyond their home to his place of business, where she allegedly humiliated him publicly.
He claimed that she once brought soldiers to his shop, who assaulted him, ransacked the premises and carted away his goods.
The plaintiff further accused his wife of infidelity, alleging that she took to immoral behaviour and was frequently seen in the company of other men.
Insisting that he had endured enough, Lukman urged the court to bring the marriage to an end, saying his safety and peace of mind were at stake.
He also asked the court to order Aderonke to vacate the two-bedroom flat she currently occupies, arguing that the property solely belongs to him.
The court adjourned the matter for further hearing.
