Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasised the critical role of Nigeria’s youth in driving national and continental progress, advocating for deliberate efforts to bridge generational divides.
Represented by Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff, Shettima spoke at a landmark youth conference in Abuja, urging stakeholders to prioritise youth empowerment for sustainable development.
“There is no nation that can prosper without investing in its youth. They are not just leaders of tomorrow but anchors of today,” Shettima emphasised, adding that President Tinubu’s administration is steadfast in creating avenues for youth participation in governance and development.
The conference, themed: “Shaping Africa’s Future with AfCFTA and Agenda 2063,” spotlighted the synergies between youth-centered policies in Nigeria and broader African development blueprints.
Shettima highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Agenda 2063 as transformative platforms, positioning Nigerian youth as catalysts for innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
“AfCFTA is more than a trade agreement; it’s an opportunity to empower our youth to innovate, connect, and lead Africa into a new era of prosperity. The energy and creativity of young Nigerians will turn Africa’s vision of unity and progress into reality,” he noted.
A key milestone of the conference was the launch of the Ubuntu Trade App, a digital platform aimed at enhancing Africa’s trade integration and supporting young entrepreneurs. Shettima praised the app as a symbol of youth-driven ingenuity.
“This app reflects the brilliance of our young minds. From agriculture to technology, Nigerian youth have consistently delivered solutions that redefine industries and connect markets,” he said.
The Vice President commended the Mandela Washington Fellows for their leadership in education, healthcare, and social justice. “Your dedication is an inspiration for generations to come. When given the right tools, our youth achieve extraordinary things,” he remarked.
Shettima also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to including young people in decision-making processes. “Our engagement with youth is a necessity, not symbolism. By combining their fresh ideas with seasoned experience, we create a synergy that strengthens our nation,” he said.
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Richard M. Mills, represented by Deputy Chief of Mission David J. Greene, lauded Nigeria’s efforts to empower youth and foster economic growth. He emphasised the importance of building networks across Africa to strengthen trade, innovation, and human connections.
The Technical Adviser to the Vice President on Women, Youth Engagement, and Impact, Hajiya Hauwa Liman, described the conference as a testament to Nigeria’s shared commitment to Africa’s prosperity. She noted that the Ubuntu Trade App’s launch marked a turning point in fostering intra-African trade and empowering young entrepreneurs.
Ms. Farida Yahaya, President of the Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Association of Nigeria, highlighted the association’s strides in addressing critical challenges in Nigeria. “Our members have demonstrated exceptional leadership by championing initiatives that drive sustainable development, foster social cohesion, and inspire future generations,” she said.
The conference concluded with optimism for Africa’s future, driven by youth innovation and commitment. Shettima declared, “The future is bright because our youth are shaping it.”
The event was attended by notable figures, including Minister of State for Youth Development Ayodele Olawande, NCC Executive Vice Chairman Engr. Aminu Maida, and NYSC Director-General Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed.
