A major political realignment in northern Nigeria gathered momentum on Monday as Vice President Kashim Shettima, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and other top figures of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) formally received Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the party.
The grand reception, held at Sani Abacha Stadium, drew a large crowd of APC governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly legislators from across the country, signalling what observers describe as a significant consolidation of political influence in the region.
Governor Yusuf’s defection, which was formalised on January 26, 2026, followed his exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and marked a dramatic shift in Kano’s political landscape. The move, insiders say, is part of a broader wave of realignments shaping power dynamics in northern Nigeria ahead of future electoral contests.
At the ceremony, Vice President Shettima described the Kano governor’s entry into the APC as a “strategic and welcome development” that would strengthen governance and accelerate development in the state. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive growth under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that unity among political leaders remained crucial to achieving national objectives.
Governor Uba Sani, speaking alongside other APC leaders, said Yusuf’s decision reflected growing confidence in the ruling party’s policies and direction. He stressed that the APC remained open to leaders willing to contribute to national development, regardless of their previous political affiliations.
The Kano governor, who was first received into the party by APC stalwarts including Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Barau I. Jibrin, said his decision to join the APC was informed by the need to align Kano State with federal initiatives.
According to him, collaboration with the Federal Government would enable the state to benefit more directly from policies and programmes aimed at economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare.
