Student Electrocuted While Charging Phone During Thunderstorm in Osun

A 100-level student of Business Administration at the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Gbolahan Ojolo, tragically lost his life on Friday evening after being electrocuted while using his mobile phone during a thunderstorm.

The incident occurred at a private hostel located near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction in Ilesa. According to eyewitness reports, the student was playing a game on his phone while it was connected to an electrical outlet when a lightning strike during the storm caused a surge, fatally electrocuting him.

Ojolo was immediately rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa in a desperate attempt to save his life. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The management of the University of Ilesa expressed profound sorrow over the incident. In a statement released through the university’s Registrar, Mr Funso Ojo, the institution confirmed the tragic event and announced that the police have commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, alongside other senior university officials and the Area Commander of Police, personally received Gbolahan’s father in Ilesa and extended their condolences. The university has pledged to provide continued support to the bereaved family as they navigate this devastating loss.

“This is a heart-wrenching tragedy for the entire university community,” said Professor Asaolu. “Gbolahan was a promising young student, and our thoughts are with his family at this painful time.”
