In our Sunday school today, we delve into the concept of sacrifice for the betterment of our beloved nation, Nigeria.
Recently, I came across a compelling video in which President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu fervently implored Nigerians to recognize the unsustainability of fuel subsidies. He emphasized that the current realities and financial constraints make it impossible to continue with the subsidy system, which predominantly benefits the wealthy.
Tinubu’s vision encompasses significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and social security, all of which require collective sacrifice to come to fruition. Let us explore this theme through Biblical verses that reinforce the value of selflessness and looking beyond personal interests.
Sacrifice in Light of Biblical Teachings:
1 Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
In Tinubu’s passionate plea to Nigerians, we see a reflection of the Biblical call to put the needs of others before our own. Sacrificing immediate benefits, such as fuel subsidies, can lead to transformative improvements in critical sectors, ultimately benefitting all citizens.
2 Mark 8:35 (NIV): “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”
Jesus’s words remind us that sacrificing for a greater cause brings eternal rewards. In the context of Nigeria’s progress, sacrificing certain privileges for the betterment of our nation can lead to a brighter future for generations to come.
3 Galatians 6:9 (NIV): “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Tinubu’s administration emphasizes the need for persistence and endurance in implementing reforms for Nigeria’s growth. Just as Paul encouraged the Galatians not to grow weary in doing good, we are reminded that embracing sacrifice will yield a bountiful harvest of progress and prosperity.

Drawing from Tinubu’s vision, we see a comprehensive plan to utilize the funds from subsidy removal for the betterment of our nation:
1 Infrastructure Development: Investing in the construction and maintenance of vital infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, can enhance connectivity and facilitate economic growth.
2 Healthcare Advancements: Channeling resources into the healthcare system will provide better medical facilities and ensure access to affordable healthcare for all Nigerians.
3 Education Boost: By strengthening the educational system, Tinubu aims to provide quality education to every Nigerian, offering opportunities for personal and national development.
4 Agricultural and Food Security: Promoting agriculture and ensuring food security will lead to self-sufficiency, reducing our dependence on imports and enhancing economic stability.
5 Social Insurance Packages: Introducing social safety nets will protect vulnerable members of society, demonstrating compassion and unity as a nation.
As we reflect on Tinubu’s sincere plea for sacrifice and his vision for a greater Nigeria, let us remember the biblical principles that support this call to selflessness.
