In a defiant stance against mounting calls for nationwide protests over economic challenges, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has sparked controversy with his remarks at a recent event in Rivers state.
Addressing attendees at a Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) function on Tuesday, Akpabio taunted those advocating for demonstrations, urging them to proceed while he and others would continue “eating”.
The comments come amidst widespread discontent and a planned protest by some Nigerians demanding economic and political reforms. Despite efforts by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to persuade organizers toward a virtual protest, they remained resolute about taking to the streets.
Akpabio, however, expressed disinterest in any “regime change”, emphasizing unity in support of the current administration. “All of us feel the impact of what is happening now. But we are aware it will be for a short while,” Akpabio stated, acknowledging the nation’s current challenges.
Furthermore, he highlighted the detrimental effects of oil and gas activities in the Niger Delta region, underscoring the urgent need for legislative interventions to address issues like oil spillage and environmental pollution. “The specific issues faced by the Niger Delta must be contained in that communique because we are going to make it available to Mr. President,” Akpabio assured, outlining plans for parliamentary support and executive actions.
Amidst the escalating tension, the National Assembly, under Akpabio’s leadership, has convened an emergency session scheduled for the eve of the planned protests. This move is seen as a preemptive effort to address grievances and potentially preempt or diffuse public unrest.
