In a move to alleviate the rising cost of living and address transportation challenges faced by Nigerians, the administration of President Bola Tinubu has unveiled 64 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.
The presentation took place at the State House in Abuja on Sunday, fulfilling the government’s promise made during negotiations on the new minimum wage.
The buses, which were handed over to labour and student leaders, are part of President Tinubu’s broader initiative to ease the hardship being experienced by the public, particularly in the wake of economic adjustments.
This gesture comes after the President’s pledge in July to provide 36 CNG buses to labor unions across the country during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, explained that the initiative is aimed at reducing transportation costs for workers and students.
Each of the 36 promised CNG-powered buses has a seating capacity of 100, designed to serve high-traffic routes for labour and student groups.
During the handover ceremony, Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, represented the federal government. He highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing the financial burden on citizens, stating that the buses are just one part of a series of interventions aimed at addressing the high cost of living.
This action underscores President Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to deliver on its promises to Nigerians, especially in the context of ongoing labor negotiations and the call for a higher minimum wage.
The unveiling marks a significant step in the government’s plan to transition to cleaner energy sources while providing relief to labour unions and students who have been vocal about the need for affordable and efficient public transportation.
