President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the conversion of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a full-fledged university.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed the development during a visit to the institution on Friday, confirming that steps towards formalising the transition are already in motion.
Addressing staff and students, Alausa acknowledged their long-standing calls for the institution’s elevation. “The rector mentioned that the college community has been praying and fasting for this change. You’ve caught me slightly off guard, but when I brought the matter to President Tinubu, he swiftly approved it. Now, we are only awaiting the official documentation and necessary procedures,” he stated.
Alausa commended YABATECH for its academic excellence, highlighting the calibre of its faculty. “This institution is a legacy, with over 200 PhD holders among its staff. It is more than ready to assume university status. Credit goes to President Tinubu, who remains deeply committed to education and the future of young Nigerians,” he remarked.
The minister also reiterated the government’s focus on strengthening technical, vocational, and entrepreneurship education as a means of curbing the “Japa Syndrome” – the growing trend of skilled Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad. He stressed the importance of training in artificial intelligence, robotics, and coding, enabling graduates to work for international companies while residing in Nigeria. “By developing expertise in these fields, our youth can earn foreign exchange without emigrating for low-paid jobs,” he explained.
During the visit, Alausa praised YABATECH’s management for its dedication to maintaining infrastructure and fostering innovation. “We will continue to support you in ensuring this transformation is a success,” he assured.
In his remarks, the rector, Dr Ibrahim Abdul, underlined the significance of the institution’s upgrade, stating that YABATECH’s aspiration is not merely to become a university but to set itself apart as a centre for technical and vocational excellence. “We aim to drive innovation, tackle societal challenges, and contribute to national development. We have the expertise, and with government backing, we can turn this vision into reality,” he said.
