Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally handed over the Chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio at the 67th Ordinary Session held in Abuja. In a symbolic gesture, Tinubu presented the ECOWAS emblem, expressing his confidence in a stronger and more united regional bloc.
Tinubu, who served two consecutive terms as ECOWAS Chair after his first election in July 2023 and re-election in July 2024, focused his tenure on peace, security, and regional integration. Supported by regional leaders, his re-election underscored the desire for continuity during critical times marked by political instability, military coups, and pressing economic concerns across West Africa.
Throughout his term, Tinubu was defined by his firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government, making significant moves to address the political crises in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. His approach, although contested, aimed to reinforce ECOWAS’s foundational values of democratic governance and collective security.
As President Julius Maada Bio assumes the role of ECOWAS Chair, expectations for strong leadership are high.
