President Bola Tinubu has approved the dismissal of public and private sector workers found using fake degree certificates from institutions in Benin and Togo.
This decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, following a federal executive council meeting chaired by the President.
The crackdown comes in the wake of an investigative report by undercover journalist Umar Audu, which uncovered the widespread use of unaccredited and unrecognized degrees among Nigerian workers.
The report highlighted that many individuals had secured employment or promotions using qualifications from non-licensed institutions in these neighboring countries.
To enforce this directive, the Nigerian government plans to work closely with agencies such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Immigration Service.
This collaboration aims to identify and dismiss thousands of individuals with unrecognized qualifications from the country’s workforce.
Minister Mamman emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “And from 2017, anybody who attended a university solely run in English is wasting his time because it’s not an approved university. That is their policy.”
