President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate retirement of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, bringing a sudden end to his controversial tenure and appointing Tunji Disu as the new head of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources within the presidency disclosed that Egbetokun was summoned to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, where he was directed to tender his resignation with immediate effect. The development signals a major shift in Nigeria’s security leadership amid ongoing efforts to reposition the nation’s policing system.

Egbetokun, who was appointed on 19 June 2023 as the 22nd Inspector General of Police, served for less than three years. His time in office was marked by attempts to tackle internal security challenges, but was also dogged by controversy and public scrutiny over his continued stay and administrative decisions.

Further details obtained by this online newspaper indicate that the decision forms part of a broader shake-up within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at strengthening operational efficiency, discipline and accountability.

To replace him, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Tunji Disu, a seasoned officer with a strong background in operations and criminal investigations. Disu has previously headed key formations, including the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos, where he earned a reputation for tackling complex criminal cases.

Although an official statement from the presidency is expected to formalise the transition, insiders say the new appointment takes immediate effect.
