Gwoza – No fewer than 18 people lost their lives on Saturday, July 29, 2024, in one of the deadliest attacks Borno State has seen in recent months.
The tragedy unfolded in Gwoza when four suicide bombers detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs), leaving more than 30 others injured. The victims sustained a range of injuries, from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures, overwhelming local medical facilities.
In response to the attack, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the perpetrators and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
“We will deal decisively with any troublemakers who seek to destabilize our nation and harm our citizens,” Tinubu stated. “The safety and security of every Nigerian are paramount, and this administration will not rest until peace is restored in every corner of our country.”
The bombings in Gwoza represent a significant escalation in violence in Borno State, an area already plagued by insurgent activity. The incident has sparked outrage and fear among the local population, many of whom have called for increased security measures and more robust government intervention.
Emergency response teams and security forces have been deployed to the scene to assist the wounded and investigate the attack. Local hospitals are currently treating those injured, and the most critically wounded have been transferred to specialized facilities for further care.
As the nation mourns the loss of life, President Tinubu has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and united against the forces of terror. “We must stand together in the face of such atrocities,” he said. “Our unity is our strength, and together we will overcome these challenges.”
The international community has also condemned the attacks, with several foreign leaders expressing their condolences and offering support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.
