The market men and women in Itoku and Asero Markets in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, were thrilled to receive the news from the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, about the government’s plan to support locally produced Adire for local and international markets as a means to reduce poverty and improve the economy.
During her visit, the Minister took the time to sensitize the market women on the market monies program and other social safety net programs from the ministry. She emphasized the government’s intention to ensure that Adire becomes known around the world, while reducing the presence of the imported imposter Adire.
The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to creating job opportunities through the local fabrics production chain and boosting exports. She assured the market women of the government’s intention to provide a subsidy for the people to enable the Adire makers to produce local Adire that will be used in the country and exported out of the country.
This will help to build the micro and macro economy and make Nigeria less dependent on imports.
The Minister also revealed that the government had identified about five interventions that would positively impact lives in Ogun State, covering about 100,000 persons in the state. She explained that Adire has both local equipment production and modern production, and that the government would create new Adire clusters through schemes targeted at poverty eradication.
This is a commendable initiative that will not only boost the economy but also create job opportunities and improve the livelihoods of the people.
