A 46-year-old Uber driver, Muftau Abiodun Musa, has tragically taken his own life in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, after enduring years of familial pressure to marry.
The incident, which has left the local community in shock, follows a long battle with depression that Musa faced in recent years.
According to sources close to the family, Musa’s mental health began deteriorating five years ago, compounded by a series of personal and financial challenges. He had previously attempted suicide twice: once after struggling to pay his rent, and again in December 2023 when he attempted to hang himself. His neighbours intervened in that instance, and he was subsequently admitted to hospital after ingesting insecticide in another suicide attempt.
The root of Musa’s distress was reportedly intensified by an eviction from the home of a close friend, who had been offering him temporary accommodation. The eviction was prompted by the property owner’s plans to renovate the house. With nowhere to turn, Musa’s situation became increasingly untenable.
Sources revealed that the expiration of his house rent at the end of December 2023 added to his burden. He was informed just days ago that he would have to vacate the premises by the end of January, as the landlord had plans to renovate the property. This latest setback seems to have been the breaking point, and Musa, who was unmarried and childless, tragically took his life by hanging.
Before his death, Musa left a note requesting that no one mourn his passing and directed anyone who discovered his body to check his phone for further instructions.
The local police have confirmed that the Homicide section of the Osun State Police Command is now handling the investigation into his death. Authorities have expressed concern over the toll that mental health struggles, particularly under financial strain and social expectations, are taking on individuals in the community.
Musa’s family have been contacted, and the case is continuing to unfold.
