The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has confirmed an increase in hostel accommodation fees for the upcoming 2024/2025 academic year. The revised fees, which were posted on the University’s official website over the weekend, show significant hikes across a variety of hostel types.
Notably, the cost for students staying in regular hostels (Halls 1, 2, 3 & 4) has risen from N27,200 to N31,000 per session. Other hostels, including the NDDC hostel, will now charge N60,000, up from the previous N52,000. Fees for Hall 5 have been raised to N46,000, while Hall 6 now costs N73,000, up from N64,000.
The price for accommodation in the popular Festus Akingbola hostels has also seen an increase. For example, the cost for a two-person room on the second floor has jumped from N80,600 to N100,000. Similarly, the price for a four-person room, top bunk, has risen from N40,000 to N46,000, while the price for a down bunk in the same room now costs N71,000, up from N64,000.
Other hostels also saw notable hikes, with the Intercontinental Hostel fees rising to N100,000 from N80,600, and the PG Hostel Ekewan going from N75,000 to N82,000.
Further increases have been implemented across several other hostels, including the Clinical hostel (now N37,000, up from N32,000), Hall 7 (N116,000, up from N97,500), and Keystone Hostel (also N116,000, up from N97,500). TETFund hostels (A, B, C, D), as well as the Senator Danjuma Hostel, now charge between N120,000 and N150,000.
Despite the substantial hikes, the university has not provided a formal explanation for the increase in fees. As of the time of writing, management has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
This move comes as many students and their families prepare for the new academic session, with concerns about the affordability of campus accommodation amidst the rising costs.
