The Acting Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benin, Effang Okim, has clarified the agency’s decision to grant bail to Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, who was recently arrested on allegations of naira mutilation and abuse. Okim emphasised that the move was made in accordance with the law to ensure that Okungbowa faces fair and due process of justice.
Speaking at a visit to the Secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City on Thursday, Okim addressed the concerns raised by the public regarding Okungbowa’s release.
He explained that the EFCC is tasked with enforcing the law, not creating it, and pointed out that Okungbowa’s placement in a separate detention cell was not an unusual or preferential treatment but rather a precautionary measure. Okim noted that Okungbowa holds significant influence within the community, particularly among the youth, and has political connections that warranted the extra care.
“He was detained following the correct procedures and was brought before a competent Federal High Court, with a respected judge overseeing the case,” Okim said, rejecting claims of unfair treatment. He further revealed that Okungbowa’s case has been adjourned to May 20th for hearing, reinforcing that the EFCC’s handling of the matter was thorough and in line with legal standards.
In his remarks, Okim expressed confidence in the agency’s commitment to tackling financial crime, despite some critics seeking to undermine its efforts. “We are serious-minded and focused on achieving our goals,” he stated, adding that the EFCC deserved recognition for its work, especially in the face of ongoing distractions. “We will continue to do our job with dedication.”
Earlier, Okim acknowledged the vital role of the media in the EFCC’s success. He praised the ongoing partnership between the agency and the press, stating, “Without the media, our work wouldn’t be as effective. You’ve been crucial to our achievements.”
Dr. Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ, commended the EFCC for its efforts in reducing fraudulent activities, particularly in Edo State. However, he raised concerns about the increasing incidents of ritual killings, which he said were now linked to fraudulent practices.
In response, Okim clarified that while ritual killings fall outside the EFCC’s specific mandate, the agency remains vigilant in addressing any cases that intersect with economic and financial crimes.
