One year after the passing of her husband, Rotimi Akeredolu, the former governor of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has shared her heart-wrenching reflections on his battle with cancer, urging Nigerians to focus on medical treatment rather than relying solely on spiritual interventions.
In an emotional interview with Star News publisher, Olumide Akinrinlola, Betty opened up about the frustration she felt witnessing her late husband’s reliance on spiritual practices in the face of his illness. She recounted how well-meaning individuals frequently suggested alternatives such as “mountain climbing,” “blessed handkerchiefs,” and various prayers, but none of these, she said, produced the desired results.
“What came out of all their mountain climbing, blessed handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, and all the noisy prayers?” she asked. “If Aketi had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow today.”
Betty, a breast cancer survivor herself, has a unique and deeply personal understanding of the disease. She emphasised that while prayer has its place, cancer is a medical condition that requires professional care and treatment. Reflecting on her own experiences, she stressed the importance of early detection and knowledge of cancer biology.
“I don’t believe in seeing cancer as a spiritual attack,” Betty stated. “You cannot pray away breast cancer or any cancer. It’s a health issue that requires medical intervention.”
In addition to her advocacy for cancer awareness, Betty also expressed concern about the current administration in Ondo State, calling the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa “rudderless.” She particularly pointed to the controversial reappointment of a former finance commissioner who had previously been dismissed for financial misconduct during her late husband’s tenure.
“You can connect the dots as to why Lucky brought her back,” Betty remarked, without going into further detail on the issue.
Turning her attention to the Federal Government, Betty voiced dissatisfaction with the state of the country under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. “Only those benefiting would say otherwise. You don’t need a soothsayer to tell you that all is not well in the country,” she said.
Despite the challenges she’s faced, Betty reaffirmed her commitment to pursuing her political aspirations, particularly her ambition for a senatorial seat. She also took the opportunity to urge Nigerians dealing with health issues to prioritise professional medical care.
“A pastor is not a doctor; he understands nothing about cancer. He can only pray, and prayers don’t cure cancer,” she asserted. “Consult a doctor—not just any doctor, but a doctor who specialises in cancer treatment.”
