Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has launched a major infrastructure drive with the unveiling of 54 heavy-duty construction machines for use across the state’s 18 local government areas.
The commissioning, held on Monday, was attended by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who praised the governor for prioritising rural development and economic growth at the grassroots.
“You have demonstrated that you love the economy of the local government. You have demonstrated that development must go to the rural areas,” Wike said, adding that the initiative has laid a strong foundation for national political progress.
Describing the project as a key pillar of his administration’s SHINE Agenda, Okpebholo said the move marks a decisive shift towards inclusive development.
“Development must not be concentrated at the centre; it must reach every village, every community and every ward,” the governor declared.
The equipment, which includes graders, bulldozers, excavators and other heavy-duty machines, will be deployed directly to local councils to enhance their capacity to execute projects such as rural road construction, drainage clearing and waste management.
“These machines are tools of transformation. They are not for show. They are not for storage. They are for work,” Okpebholo emphasised.
Wike commended the initiative, noting that equipping local governments with functional machinery would accelerate project delivery and reduce dependence on contractors.
Stakeholders at the event, including political leaders and traditional rulers, described the intervention as timely, especially as rural communities demand improved infrastructure and better sanitation.
