A woman has been arrested after a disturbing video emerged showing her allegedly assaulting her five-year-old stepdaughter. Ihsanatu Shaaibu, the suspect, was taken into custody following widespread outrage on social media after the footage went viral.
According to a statement by police spokesman ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the video depicts Shaaibu physically abusing her stepdaughter, Fa’iza Bala. The clip, which was shared widely online, prompted swift action from the authorities. The police have since identified Shaaibu and arrested her on Thursday. A photograph of the accused was also released as part of the announcement. However, the identity of a second individual implicated in the incident has yet to be revealed.
In a press statement, Adejobi assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and once concluded, the suspect would be prosecuted. He also pledged to keep the public informed as the case progresses through the legal system.
In a related development, another teacher was remanded in custody following an unrelated incident of child abuse. Stella Nwadigo, a 45-year-old private school teacher, was charged with assaulting a three-year-old pupil at Christ-Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos. The incident, which was also captured on video, shows Nwadigo repeatedly hitting the young child.
Nwadigo appeared in Magistrate Court 1, Ogba, Lagos, on Thursday, where she pleaded not guilty to the charges. She was subsequently remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility as the case moves forward. The footage of the assault has caused similar outrage, leading to calls for stronger protections for vulnerable children.
