Abuja – Following Nigeria’s disappointing defeat to the Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has called for immediate and comprehensive action from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
In a critical meeting held at the Minister’s office in Abuja, Enoh underscored the urgent need for a robust framework to ensure Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup and address longstanding issues hindering the performance and growth of Nigerian football.
During the meeting, a broad array of concerns were discussed, including the performance and current status of the national team’s coach, the effectiveness of the NFF Technical Committee and Technical Department, and the discipline within the national team camp. Senator Enoh emphasized the necessity of introducing a new wave of talented Nigerian players, wherever they may be found, to ensure that the best talents are always representing the country.
Additionally, the discussion touched on the need for broader and more inclusive representation within the NFF Congress. This expansion is seen as crucial for fostering greater inclusivity and representation in Nigerian football’s decision-making processes.
The NFF and its technical team have been given a strict deadline of one week to present a comprehensive report detailing the progressive steps they have taken to prepare the team for the upcoming competitive matches. This directive aims to instill a sense of urgency and accountability within the football federation.
Expressing the deep disappointment felt by both Nigerians and the government over the poor results in the qualifiers, Senator Enoh highlighted the gravity of Nigeria’s current standing. With just three points from a possible twelve and sitting second from bottom in the group, the situation is dire and deemed unacceptable by the Minister.
